Activities at Oakdale:

Our Activities co-ordinator, and their assistants are trained in providing a lively programme of activities each day. Residents are encouraged and facilitated to continue whatever hobbies and leisure pursuits they choose. Engagement in social activities is viewed as a necessary component of a healthy lifestyle. Some of the leisure activities which we offer in Oakdale include:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Aerobics for Seniors
  • Bingo
  • Live Music and Dancing
  • Story Telling
  • Board Games and Cards
  • Gardening
  • Cookery
  • T.V. and films
  • Visiting theatre acts and farm animal visits.
  • Provision of daily newspapers, however magazines and newspapers can be delivered daily to the resident’s room on request
  • Shop and library facilities
  • Outings: we endeavour to have a number of residents outings throughout the year, e.g. visit to Dunamaise Theatre, Emo Court and Gardens, Kildare Shopping Village and other places of interest like – Guinness Store House, Croke Park, Dail Eireann and Dublin Castle and the Zoo.

Saorview TV channels are provided as standard, however if a resident requires multi- channel or cable TV in their room this can be arranged for an additional charge. Residents may provide their own multichannel/sky box and deal directly with the network provider as they would in their own home.  We can arrange for a resident to install their own land line in their bedroom which will be billed in the normal manner.

Multi-channel T.V. and newspapers are provided as standard in our dayroom and sitting rooms, along with wifi, and internet access with Skype facility.

Two taxi hire companies operate locally into the town of Portarlington and we also use the services of a specialist wheelchair taxi if required.

Oakdale Nursing Home respects the rights of our residents to practice their own religious beliefs. We welcome visits from clergy of all denominations to use our facilities. The Oratory is available for residents who want to spend some quiet time in worship. Every effort will be made to accommodate and support the individual spiritual needs of all residents.

Mass is celebrated every Saturday morning at 11.30. In addition a Eucharistic Minister visits every Sunday and Tuesday morning and Rosary takes place every Thursday morning. The local Church of Ireland minister holds a service every month for his congregation. We can arrange to contact clergy as required by residents. Alternatively residents are facilitated to attend Mass or Service in the local churches.
